Frequently Asked Questions

When are the practices?

Practices should be held only once a week. If your practice is rained out, it is not required or necessary to make up the practice. However, if the players' parents, and the coach are amicable about making up a practice, feel free to do so. It isn't necessary for a player to attend all practices to play in the games. Practices are only 1 hour in duration and can be held between 5:30-6:30 PM or 6:00-7:00 PM on week days, or 10:00-11:00 am, 10:30-11:30 am, or 11:00 am-12:00 PM on Saturdays.

Practices should be located on the Guilderland school grounds or at the Guilderland town pocket parks (exceptions - Tawasentha and Keenholtz parks). Division K and 1 teams should practice at the elementary school that your child attends. Example: If your child attends Lynnwood School, you should have your practice at that school. Divisions 2, 3 and 4 should practice primarily at DiCaprio Park or the Farnsworth Middle School.

What should I bring to practice?

A ball and a water bottle. Make sure to wear your shin guards. PLEASE NOTE, there are no earrings or jewelry of any kind allowed at practices and games.

How long are the games?

All games are 1 hour in duration with four quarters. Quarters are roughly 15 minutes in duration. There are brief breaks after each quarter. After the first quarter there is a 2-3 minute break for water, after the second quarter there is a 4-5 minute break for water and oranges, and after the third quarter there is a brief 2-3 minute water break. Referees will keep track of the game time and will announce quarter breaks and the beginning and ending of games.

Do players get fair playing time?

All players will play an equal amount of time, regardless of ability or experience. No player should play two quarters more than any other player on the team. Example: If Sally plays in all 4 quarters, Dawn must not play in only 2 quarters. Sally and Dawn would each play 3 quarters.

Do players play all positions?

All players will rotate positions during each game. Example: Marvin might be a striker or forward during the first quarter, a halfback or midfield man during the second quarter, a fullback or defensive player during the third quarter, and a goalie during the fourth quarter. There must be a new goalie in each quarter, in other words, you must have four different goalies during every game.

DiCaprio Park

What is the uniform?

You need to purchase a Guilderland Rec. soccer shirt for $17.00. If you need a uniform shirt, you can find them at the first game. On the first game day, there will be tables with boxes set on them. The shirts will be in the boxes. If players have purchased uniform shirts with their application form, the parents give the child's name to the table attendant and then select a shirt. If the shirt was not purchased with the application, they can be bought on the spot at the table.

Required equipment - All players must wear shin guards. If a player comes to the game without their shin guards, they cannot play. All players must wear socks over their shin guards, even if they are wearing "sock style" shin guards. All players must wear uniform shirts during the game. If the temperature is nippy, and players want to wear jackets or sweatshirts during the game, they must wear them under their uniform shirts (no hooded sweatshirts). Players must not wear any jewelry, hats or sunglasses during the game. Only prescription glasses may be worn on the field (clear or sunglasses). Players who have long hair can only wear rubber bands or "scrunchies" (a rubber band with a sewn cloth covering) to hold their hair back. No barrettes, bobbie pins, or other hair clips are allowed. Players are not allowed to put their first names on their uniform shirt. Shorts or sweat pants are fine.

Recommended equipment - The league recommends, but doesn't require, the use of mouth guards. Cleats are optional, but recommended for good footing. The cleat exchange box is also located at the board table. If you have cleats that don't fit anymore, please donate them, and take a pair that fits. During practice: Required equipment - All players must wear shin guards. If a player comes to practice without their shin guards, they cannot participate in practice.
